We are delighted to be able to confirm that Dr David Begley has been appointed as the Clinical Director for Cardiology at Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, in September 2018.

An Impressive Journey

This is a prestigious position that has been awarded to Dr Begley because of his dedication and commitment to the field of Cardiology. An area he has worked in since he graduated from the University of Edinburgh over two decades ago in 1994 where he was awarded his degree of Doctor of Medicine. After his graduation, Dr Begley spent some time at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA where he undertook clinic research in the field of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. 

Further studies took place in the northern rotation for general cardiology, between the two institutions of the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. This was where he completed his training for the subspecialty of cardiac electrophysiology and device therapy. In 2007 Dr David Begley was appointed by Papworth as a consultant, so they have a long working relationship with him. In 2011 he also became their clinical lead for the subjects of his subspecialty, cardiac electrophysiology and device therapy.

A Vast Range of Experience

To the role, Dr Begley brings a vast experience in every aspect of adult cardiac electrophysiology including the ablation of complex arrhythmias, device implantation, extraction techniques. From a personal interest point of view, he focuses on the ablation of ventricular tachycardias related to ischaemic heart disease and cardiomyopathies, which has meant actively seeking more experience in an attempt to understand and better assist patients in this area. Like most physicians, Dr Begley undertakes research and has chosen to focus on the ablation of complex arrhythmias.

A Teacher and Guide

Keen to ensure that new graduates see the passion in cardiology work, Dr Begley is also currently the Undergraduate Program Director in Cardiology here at Cambridge. He is the educational supervisor for foundation trainees and enjoys the mentoring and inspiring of students at all levels of their medical career. Finally, his is also a University of Cambridge Senior Clinical Tutor. Since 2010, Dr Begley has also been involved in the British Heart Rhythm Society Accreditation Examination Committee and was pivotal to the revision of the program there. 

Clinical Director for Cardiology 

While the recent appointment is something we are all very proud of Dr Begley is keen to stress that it will not change his commitment and hands-on working relationship with his patients. Being the Clinical Director for Cardiology will enable him to remain at the cutting edge of new procedures and research. This will improve the outlook for many patients and ensure that all patients have the latest in care and monitoring.
