About Dr Begley – Private Consultant Cardiologist in Cambridgeshire
Dr Begley graduated from Edinburgh Medical School in 1994 (MB ChB). He completed his residency in South East Scotland. Following this, he spent 3 years at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
Whilst in the USA, he undertook research so he gained a deeper understanding of conditions. His primary focus was the investigation and management of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This culminated in the completion of a research degree through the University of Edinburgh.
He returned to the UK in 2002 so he could further progress his training. At this point, he completed specialist training in cardiology and cardiac rhythm management. He proudly undertook this at the internationally respected Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
In 2007 he was appointed a consultant in Cardiology at Papworth Hospital. His appointment expanded the existing cardiac rhythm management team. He operated as Clinical Lead for CRM from 2011 until 2016 so was privileged to hold such a highly regarded position for this period.
He proudly maintained the department’s position as one of the highest volume centres in the country for various aspects of the cardio field. These included electrophysiology studies and complex ablations as well as cardiac device implants.
Papworth Hospital was granted Royal Patronage in 2017. It was officially renamed Royal Papworth Hospital in 2018. Dr Begley became Clinical Director for cardiology in 2018 so was delighted to be part of this prestigious establishment.
During his time at Royal Papworth Hospital, Dr Begley was also elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2009 (FRCP) so is also highly thought of by peers.
Training for the Future
Training future generations of doctors is extremely important so Dr Begley has been heavily involved in education since his appointment.
He completed a postgraduate certificate in medical education (PG Cert Med Ed) at the University of Cambridge in 2013. From 2013 to 2018 he was also the Royal College Tutor at Royal Papworth. He is involved with undergraduates from the School of Medicine in Cambridge. In addition, he is a University of Cambridge Senior Clinical Tutor so continue to train and develop students.
In addition, Dr Begley has regularly been invited to provide educational support through presentations and training. These events have included the annual Heart Rhythm Congress and the British Cardiovascular Society Annual Conference. He also attends regional Cardiac Update courses organised by the Arrhythmia Alliance so actively continues to increase his knowledge.
